Will earthquakes be predictable in California by 2030?
I was talking to an ex-physics major at UC Berkeley and he said that there is a good chance earthquakes in California will be predictable by 2030, in the sense that the government can evacuate citizens in the event of a significant fore coming quake. He says a lot of the principles of earthquake predicting can be learned from volcano predictions, a field that scientists are close to mastering. He says the two biggest set backs at the moment are a. the technology to place censors along a fault like the San Andreas, and b. of course full understanding of the specific causes of earthquakes. Anyways, I thought he made some valid points and was just wondering what you guys think of the issue. It sure be nice for a warning before the ground starts to tremble. Is that reality in the some-what near future?
