Why exactly did Russia trade Alaska to the US? They didn't even make great money off of it.. were they (cont)?

desperate for cash or something? They roughly traded it, according to my stats, for the equivalent of 110 million today. The 2007 gross state product was $44.9 billion. That's in ONE YEAR. Did they not know about the resources back then due to technological limitations?
